If you love to shop, you’ll know that one of the hardest things that you can do is declutter your home and your life to clear things away. You’ve been shopping and you know that you’ve bought a million things that you love. In fact, you’ve been accumulating things for years and they’re building up in the house really quickly. The time has come for you to either move house or start to move your stuff out for a renovation project to go ahead – what are you going to do with everything in the way?
Well, the simple answer to that is to declutter it all! Clearing out all of the clutter is going to make your house feel more open, cleaner and in a way, cleansed. It doesn’t mean that it’s easy to declutter, however. You need to consider Self Storage to hold your things if you’re planning a huge clear out and clean, and you need to think about getting some help if your storage issues are out of control. Other than that, here are the decluttering tips that you didn’t know you needed!
- Plan ahead for your decluttering time. You want to make sure that your home is completely clear, and that’s going to take some time. Give yourself as much time as possible to clear it all off. It may take a few days, if not weeks and if it’s a big job, you need to ensure that you have enough time to prioritize your belongings. Keep your goals in sight with your decluttering. It may take a little time to get it all done but if you have an end-game, you’ll get there.
- List every room and every cupboard. It can be overwhelming to declutter an entire house, but if you go room to room, cupboard by cupboard instead, it won’t feel as terrifying! You have to take smaller bites if you want the job to be a success. You can make lists, set goals and ensure that little by little, you are getting through it all.
- Three piles will help. You want a pile to keep, a pile to sell and a pile to donate for every single room you cover in your house. If you don’t want to end up with more piles of stuff on the floor, get a few huge bins and separate things this way. You won’t regret this as you can keep things organized as you declutter them. Move the things you’re keeping to storage if you plan to renovate or redecorate, too.
- Use the larger items to your advantage. If you are renovating, move the larger furniture pieces to your storage solution first. If you can get these out of the way, you have a better idea of the size and layout of the room you’re currently in!
Decluttering can be a really big job but with a lot of organization and the right priorities, you can get through it with as little mental scarring as possible.
